I received this book via Netgalley for an honest review.
This book is the first part of a serial that will count three parts, but I’m pleasantly surprised that this first part is actually quite long.
As usual when it comes to serials and first installments, this book mainly sets the characters, the plot and sub-plots along with outlining twists that will probably arise in later installments. Just enough to pick the reader’s interest, but without giving everything away.
But there’s one thing that bothers me a little bit now that I’m finished with this book and take the time to think of the plot and the characters. The relationship between Cassidy and Gage is very present, but while the sex scenes are well-written and are quite hot, I don’t think I feel the ever-present attraction and the way Cassidy is fast opening up to him even though she doesn’t want to and is fighting it. I’m pretty sure I’d feel more towards them both together if only the author wouldn’t have used ellipses a few times in this installment. I do understand the need of ellipses here to move the story along, but it impacted the characterization just a tiny bit and also the thrill I started to feel while discovering Gage and Cassidy.
But I must stress this… I really like Cassidy and Gage together and I’m quite eager to see the evolution for them and the twists thrown in between them (because it’s obvious there will be many).
The secondary characters are nice to follow and don’t really fall into any cliché category and it’s a nice breeze of fresh air. I won’t mind discovering more of these secondary characters in the next installments, but there’s one character I really dislike, but whom has picked my curiosity. Tegan. We’ll see what’s her deal.
Also, I wish to see more of Cassidy’s family as it is, in my opinion, the most interesting thing in this story. It’s not very much explored, but the author wrote a solid ground to better build from there on. Also, I could easily feel the character’s pains, fears and guilt even. It’s well transcribed.
The writing is quite flawless. There’s a real voice in this book. It’s not something unheard of, but the voice is there and the author took a few liberties with the writing to add a little touch to better reflect Cassidy’s personality. It’s not bad even though sometimes I think the repetitions of words are too numerous even though I know these are consciously done to put an emphasis on something. (I’d have enjoyed it even more if there would have been half of them.)
Overall, it’s a good surprise and a very solid first installment on which the author can safely base this serial. I look forward to the other installments.
